Apresenta cor cinza met\u00e1lico a negro, podendo ser vermelho-terroso em variedades alteradas, brilho met\u00e1lico a v\u00edtreo (terroso em amostras alteradas), dureza 5,5\u20136,5, densidade relativa 5,2\u20135,3, fratura irregular a subconchoidal e clivagem imperfeita. \u00c9 muito comum em rochas \u00edgneas, metam\u00f3rficas e sedimentares, ocorrendo em dep\u00f3sitos hidrotermais, banded iron formations (BIFs) e lateritos de ferro, frequentemente associada a magnetita, goethita e limonita. \u00c9 a principal fonte de ferro para siderurgia, usada em a\u00e7os e pigmentos vermelhos. Cristais bem formados ou botrioidais s\u00e3o apreciados em cole\u00e7\u00f5es mineral\u00f3gicas.
