Apresenta cor preta a cinza escuro, brilho met\u00e1lico a v\u00edtreo, dureza 5,5\u20136,5, densidade relativa 5,17\u20135,18, fratura irregular a subconchoidal e clivagem imperfeita. \u00c9 comum em rochas \u00edgneas, metam\u00f3rficas e sedimentares, ocorrendo em intrus\u00f5es m\u00e1ficas, pegmatitos, veios hidrotermais e dep\u00f3sitos de min\u00e9rio de ferro, sendo tamb\u00e9m mineral acess\u00f3rio em gnaisses e basaltos. \u00c9 a principal fonte de ferro para siderurgia, usada em a\u00e7os, ligas ferrosas e separadores magn\u00e9ticos, al\u00e9m de pigmentos. Cristais bem formados ou polidos s\u00e3o apreciados em cole\u00e7\u00f5es mineral\u00f3gicas.
