Apresenta grande variedade de cores e faixas conc\u00eantricas, brilho v\u00edtreo a ceroso, dureza 6,5\u20137, densidade relativa 2,58\u20132,64, fratura conchoidal e aus\u00eancia de clivagem. Forma-se principalmente em cavidades de rochas vulc\u00e2nicas e em veios hidrotermais, pela deposi\u00e7\u00e3o sucessiva de s\u00edlica em camadas. \u00c9 amplamente utilizada como gema ornamental, em esculturas, objetos decorativos e joalheria, al\u00e9m de ter valor para colecionadores.
