Apresenta cor preta a marrom-escura, com tom bronze met\u00e1lico em cristais frescos, brilho met\u00e1lico a submet\u00e1lico, dureza 5,5, densidade relativa 4,7\u20134,8, fratura irregular e clivagem imperfeita. \u00c9 t\u00edpica de dep\u00f3sitos de mangan\u00eas hidrotermais e metam\u00f3rficos, ocorrendo em veios de mangan\u00eas, zonas de oxida\u00e7\u00e3o e lateritos, associada a pirolusita, braunita e rodocrosita. \u00c9 fonte importante de mangan\u00eas para a fabrica\u00e7\u00e3o de a\u00e7os especiais, ligas met\u00e1licas e pilhas secas. N\u00e3o \u00e9 usada como gema, mas cristais bem formados s\u00e3o apreciados em cole\u00e7\u00f5es mineral\u00f3gicas.
