Apresenta cor vari\u00e1vel (amarelo, marrom, vermelho, preto, verde ou incolor) conforme o teor de ferro, brilho adamantino a resin\u00f3ide, dureza de 3,5\u20134, densidade relativa de 3,9\u20134,1, clivagem perfeita em seis dire\u00e7\u00f5es e fratura subconchoidal a irregular. Forma-se principalmente em dep\u00f3sitos hidrotermais de sulfetos, associada a galena, pirita, calcopirita e quartzo, al\u00e9m de veios em quartzitos e pegmatitos sulfetados. \u00c9 o principal min\u00e9rio de zinco, usado industrialmente em galvaniza\u00e7\u00e3o, ligas met\u00e1licas, baterias e produtos qu\u00edmicos, estudado em mineralogia de sulfetos e gen\u00e9tica de dep\u00f3sitos hidrotermais, e algumas variedades transparentes e coloridas s\u00e3o lapidadas como gemas de cole\u00e7\u00e3o.
