Apresenta cor vermelho-escuro a vermelho-rubi, podendo parecer quase preta em agregados densos, brilho adamantino a submet\u00e1lico, dureza de 3,5\u20134, densidade relativa de 6,1\u20136,2, fratura conchoidal a irregular e clivagem imperfeita. Forma-se como mineral secund\u00e1rio na zona de oxida\u00e7\u00e3o de dep\u00f3sitos de cobre, pela altera\u00e7\u00e3o de calcopirita e bornita, frequentemente associado a malaquita, azurita, crisocola e limonita. \u00c9 min\u00e9rio secund\u00e1rio de cobre, estudado em processos de oxida\u00e7\u00e3o e enriquecimento secund\u00e1rio, e raramente utilizado como gema de cole\u00e7\u00e3o.
