Apresenta ampla varia\u00e7\u00e3o de cores devido a impurezas \u2014 pode ser incolor, cinza, marrom, azul (safira), vermelho (rubi), verde, amarelo ou violeta \u2014, com brilho v\u00edtreo a adamantino, dureza 9 (sendo o segundo mineral mais duro, depois do diamante), densidade relativa entre 3,95 e 4,1, fratura subconchoidal a irregular e aus\u00eancia de clivagem. Forma-se em rochas metam\u00f3rficas de alta temperatura e press\u00e3o, como m\u00e1rmores cristalinos e gnaisses aluminosos, al\u00e9m de rochas \u00edgneas ricas em alum\u00ednio, como sienitos nefel\u00ednicos e pegmatitos, sendo tamb\u00e9m encontrado em dep\u00f3sitos aluvionares devido \u00e0 sua resist\u00eancia. \u00c9 amplamente utilizado como abrasivo e em materiais refrat\u00e1rios, al\u00e9m de ter enorme import\u00e2ncia gemol\u00f3gica, j\u00e1 que as variedades vermelha (rubi) e azul (safira) s\u00e3o gemas preciosas de grande valor, e outras safiras coloridas tamb\u00e9m s\u00e3o usadas em joalheria.
