Apresenta cor marrom a marrom-escuro, preta, amarelada ou avermelhada, brilho adamantino a submet\u00e1lico, dureza 6\u20137, densidade relativa 6,8\u20137,1, fratura subconchoidal a irregular e clivagem imperfeita. \u00c9 o principal min\u00e9rio de estanho, ocorrendo em dep\u00f3sitos hidrotermais associados a granitos, greisens e pegmatitos, bem como em jazidas secund\u00e1rias aluvionares. Tem grande import\u00e2ncia industrial na produ\u00e7\u00e3o de soldas, ligas met\u00e1licas, revestimentos protetores contra corros\u00e3o e na ind\u00fastria eletr\u00f4nica. Embora raramente usada como gema, cristais bem formados s\u00e3o apreciados em cole\u00e7\u00f5es mineral\u00f3gicas.
