Apresenta cristais tabulares, prism\u00e1ticos ou aciculares, al\u00e9m de agregados granulares e maci\u00e7os, com cores marrom, amarelo, verde, cinza, preto, ocasionalmente vermelho ou incolor, brilho v\u00edtreo a adamantino, dureza de 5\u20135,5 e densidade relativa de 3,52\u20133,60, clivagem perfeita em uma dire\u00e7\u00e3o e fratura irregular a subconchoidal. \u00c9 comum em rochas \u00edgneas e metam\u00f3rficas, como granitos, sienitos, gnaisses e anfibolitos, associada a feldspatos, quartzo, biotita, anfib\u00f3lio e granada. Usada industrialmente como fonte de tit\u00e2nio para pigmentos e ligas met\u00e1licas; cientificamente em estudos petrogen\u00e9ticos e geocronol\u00f3gicos; e gemologicamente em variedades transparentes e coloridas.
