Forma cristais prism\u00e1ticos ou agregados granulares, com cores t\u00edpicas verde-oliva, verde-amarelado, marrom ou preto, brilho v\u00edtreo, dureza de 6,5\u20137 e densidade relativa entre 3,2 e 4,4. Apresenta clivagem imperfeita em duas dire\u00e7\u00f5es e fratura conchoidal a irregular. \u00c9 comum em rochas \u00edgneas m\u00e1ficas e ultram\u00e1ficas como peridotitos, basaltos e gabros, e tamb\u00e9m em rochas metam\u00f3rficas de alta temperatura, associada a fragmentos sedimentares derivados de ultram\u00e1ficas. Usada industrialmente como fundente, em refrat\u00e1rios, abrasivos e fonte de magn\u00e9sio; cientificamente em estudos petrogen\u00e9ticos e geot\u00e9rmicos; e gemologicamente como peridoto lapidado.
