Apresenta cores variadas \u2014 vermelho, marrom, verde, amarelo, laranja ou preto \u2014 com brilho v\u00edtreo, dureza de 6,5\u20137,5 e densidade relativa entre 3,5 e 4,3, sem clivagem e fratura irregular a subconchoidal. \u00c9 comum em rochas metam\u00f3rficas como gnaisses e xistos, e tamb\u00e9m em peridotitos, associada a mica, feldspato, estaurolita, cianita e quartzo. Industrialmente usada como abrasivo e material refrat\u00e1rio, cientificamente como mineral \u00edndice em metamorfismo, e gemologicamente em variedades transl\u00facidas coloridas.
