Apresenta cor marrom a vermelho-marrom, brilho v\u00edtreo a resinoso, dureza de 7\u20137,5 e densidade relativa de 3,7\u20133,8, com clivagem imperfeita e fratura irregular. \u00c9 t\u00edpica de metamorfismo regional de m\u00e9dio a alto grau, ocorrendo em xistos pel\u00edticos e gnaisses ricos em alum\u00ednio, associada a mica, granada, cianita, sillimanita e feldspato. Usada como mineral \u00edndice em estudos metam\u00f3rficos, ocasionalmente em abrasivos e materiais refrat\u00e1rios, e valorizada por colecionadores por suas maclas caracter\u00edsticas.
