Apresenta cristais prism\u00e1ticos alongados, fibras, agregados nodulares ou massas compactas, com cor azul a azul-violeta (mais comum), mas tamb\u00e9m marrom, verde ou rosa p\u00e1lido, brilho v\u00edtreo a sedoso, dureza de 7\u20138 e densidade relativa entre 3,3 e 3,4. Possui clivagem indistinta e fratura irregular a subconchoidal. Forma-se principalmente em rochas metam\u00f3rficas de alta temperatura, como gnaisses e xistos, e tamb\u00e9m em pegmatitos gran\u00edticos, associando-se a quartzo, feldspato e sillimanita. \u00c9 usada como mineral refrat\u00e1rio, em cer\u00e2micas de alta resist\u00eancia, isolantes el\u00e9tricos, al\u00e9m de variedades lapidadas como gemas ornamentais.
