Forma cristais prism\u00e1ticos alongados com estrias e termina\u00e7\u00f5es piramidais, apresentando cores variadas, desde preto at\u00e9 multicolorido. Possui brilho v\u00edtreo, dureza entre 7 e 7,5, clivagem fraca a ausente e fratura conchoidal a irregular. \u00c9 comum em pegmatitos, rochas metam\u00f3rficas e dep\u00f3sitos hidrotermais, associada a quartzo e mica. Usada em eletr\u00f4nica, gemologia e estudos petrogen\u00e9ticos, destaca-se na joalheria e cole\u00e7\u00f5es.
