Essas propriedades ajudam os ge\u00f3logos a classific\u00e1-los e compreender sua forma\u00e7\u00e3o, al\u00e9m de determinar suas aplica\u00e7\u00f5es pr\u00e1ticas na ind\u00fastria, tecnologia e no dia a dia. Os silicatos s\u00e3o fundamentais para a composi\u00e7\u00e3o das rochas da crosta terrestre e influenciam processos naturais como a forma\u00e7\u00e3o do solo, o ciclo da \u00e1gua e o transporte de elementos qu\u00edmicos. Eles s\u00e3o formados principalmente pelo tetraedro de s\u00edlica (SiO\u2084), uma unidade estrutural fundamental composta por um \u00e1tomo de sil\u00edcio cercado por quatro \u00e1tomos de oxig\u00eanio. A maneira como esses tetraedros se organizam \u2014 isolados, em cadeias, em folhas ou em redes tridimensionais \u2014 define as diferentes subclasses dos silicatos e determina suas propriedades f\u00edsicas e qu\u00edmicas.
