Eles se cristalizam em ambientes sedimentares ou por processos hidrot\u00e9rmicos, sendo frequentemente encontrados em rochas como calc\u00e1rio e dolomito. Os carbonatos reagem com \u00e1cidos liberando g\u00e1s carb\u00f4nico (CO\u2082), e s\u00e3o essenciais tanto na forma\u00e7\u00e3o de rochas quanto em aplica\u00e7\u00f5es industriais, como na produ\u00e7\u00e3o de cimento e corretivos de solo.
